When hiring a Handyman contractor there some important considerations. Price is important, but there are several factors to think about when considering the cost. Is the contractor capable of doing the job? Will the do a good job? Will they be around tomorrow? Is the contractor licensed/bonded/insured? Many of these issues are resolved through conversation and discussing a project. The license/ bond/ insurance is required by law. These requirements, help protect the customer and legitimize the contractor.

A handyman contractor is actually a General Contractor who is licensed by the state to do small projects totaling no more than $10,000, including labor, material and expenses. A licensed handyman contractor is required to hold a $5,000 bond and liability insurance which includes: Property damage = $20,000 Injury/death to one person = $50,000 Injury/death to more than one person = $100,00.

There are things as a handyman contractor I cannot do. I cannot run new electrical wiring, new plumbing, I can't do roofing. I am not licensed to do these trades, and perhaps more importantly these are not covered by my bond or insurance. However, I can do Maintenace on these items. For example, I can replace a plumbing fixture, which is already exists, but I cannot run new plumbing to a new fixture.

A handyman contractor can hire other trade subcontractors for projects and manage the project. I can hire a roofer on your behalf.

Handyman contractors often have a variety of skills. Jack of all trade type of thing. I fall into that category. I enjoy building, carpentry, project planning, wood working, welding. I am old enough to have a wide variety of experiences, and I like problem solving.
